Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung Is a 646-HP Rear-Drive monster

Mercedes-AMG has taken the CLE Coupé and pushed it into territory that feels almost disconnected from the normal luxury-coupe formula.The result is the Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung, an extremely limited performance machine built around one simple idea: make the driver feel everything.

Forget the usual approach of adding more equipment, more comfort and another few horsepower. This CLE has been developed in the opposite direction. Mercedes-AMG has removed weight, abandoned all-wheel drive, widened the body, fitted serious track hardware and reshaped the aerodynamics around high-speed performance.

Only 30 examples are planned, making the CLE 646 one of the rarest modern AMG creations. And with 646 hp from a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, rear-wheel drive and a 310 km/h top speed, it is not simply a cosmetic special edition.It is a completely different kind of CLE.

A CLE Built Around Driving

The standard CLE is a stylish grand-touring coupé, but the CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung has a very different mission.Mercedes-AMG says the project began within its development team rather than as a conventional production program. Engineers built an initial prototype before developing the concept into a much more comprehensive performance car.That distinction matters.

The CLE 646 isn’t simply a CLE with a more powerful engine and some aggressive bodywork. AMG has modified the underlying car extensively, including the body structure, suspension, cooling systems, brakes, aerodynamics and interior. Around 170 kilograms have been removed compared with the original configuration, while the body has been substantially reworked.The philosophy is closer to a road-legal track car than a traditional luxury coupé.

646 HP From AMG’s 4.0-Liter V8

At the center of the CLE 646 is AMG’s extensively developed 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8.It produces 646 hp (475 kW) and 850 Nm of torque, with peak torque available from 2,500 to 4,500 rpm. That gives the CLE the kind of broad, muscular power delivery expected from AMG’s V8 machinery. But the interesting part isn’t just the headline power figure.The engine uses a flat-plane crankshaft, reducing rotating mass and helping the V8 respond more eagerly to throttle inputs. AMG has also revised the engine mapping to suit the character of this particular car.

Cooling has received serious attention as well. The CLE 646 uses three separate cooling circuits, with the system strengthened for sustained high-load operation and demanding temperatures.That makes sense considering the car’s intended environment.This isn’t a machine designed merely to produce impressive numbers for a specification sheet. AMG has engineered it to withstand repeated hard use.

Rear-Wheel Drive Changes Everything

Perhaps the biggest technical decision is hiding underneath the body.The CLE 646 abandons AMG’s 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system and sends its power exclusively to the rear wheels.For a 646-hp road car, that is a significant choice.

Removing the front-driven hardware saves weight, but it also changes the personality of the car. The rear-driven layout should provide a much more direct connection between throttle input and the rear axle, particularly when exiting corners.An electronically controlled rear limited-slip differential manages torque distribution between the rear wheels.AMG has also developed a nine-stage traction-control system for use on closed circuits. With ESP switched off, the driver can select the desired amount of rear-axle slip rather than relying on conventional stability-control intervention. In other words, AMG isn’t simply allowing the rear wheels to spin. It is giving the driver control over how much they should.

0–200 km/h in 11.4 Seconds

The performance figures are suitably serious.The CLE 646 accelerates from 0–100 km/h in 3.9 seconds and reaches 200 km/h in 11.4 seconds. Top speed is 310 km/hPower is delivered through AMG’s SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission.

Those numbers put the CLE 646 firmly into supercar-performance territory, but the engineering underneath the figures is arguably more interesting than the acceleration itself.This car is about what happens once the road starts turning.

A Suspension Designed to Be Tuned

AMG worked with KW automotive to develop a dedicated steel coilover suspension for the CLE 646.The four-way adjustable dampers allow independent adjustment of low- and high-speed compression and rebound.That terminology can sound unnecessarily technical, but the purpose is straightforward.Low-speed damper settings influence the car’s response during braking, acceleration and cornering. High-speed settings become more relevant when the suspension encounters rapid wheel movements caused by bumps, curbs and other road imperfections.For a car intended to move between road driving and track use, that level of adjustment allows the chassis to be configured for different conditions.It is another indication that this CLE was engineered as a performance tool rather than simply a collectible AMG.

The Body Is 60 mm Wider

The visual transformation is impossible to miss.The CLE 646 receives a dramatically widened body, increasing the track width by 60 mm at both the front and rear.That additional width isn’t there purely for appearance.It creates room for significantly wider wheels and tires while increasing the car’s potential stability through corners. The numbers are extreme:305/30 ZR20 tires at the front and 335/30 ZR20 at the rear.Those tires sit beneath extensively redesigned carbon-fiber bodywork, including the widened fenders, hood, roof and rear components.The rear wing is manually adjustable, while the body incorporates additional structural reinforcement and an integrated roll bar.The result is a CLE that looks much more like a factory-built racing project than a conventional Mercedes coupé.

Carbon-Ceramic Brakes for Repeated Abuse

Stopping a 646-hp rear-wheel-drive coupé from 300 km/h repeatedly requires more than large brake discs.The CLE 646 uses an AMG carbon-ceramic braking system with 420 x 40 mm front discs and six-piston fixed calipers.The rear receives 360 x 32 mm discs.AMG has also developed dedicated brake cooling, using large openings in the front bumper and airflow management around the axle to help remove heat.That becomes particularly important on a track, where repeated heavy braking can quickly overwhelm conventional road-car systems.Reducing brake weight also contributes to lower unsprung mass, which can help steering response and overall chassis behavior.

The Second AMG Mythos Model

The CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung is the second model in Mercedes-Benz’s Mythos series, following the Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed.While the PureSpeed takes the extreme route of an open two-seat design, the CLE 646 approaches exclusivity through its engineering.Only 30 cars will be produced.More importantly, AMG says the entire vehicle is rebuilt by hand at its Affalterbach headquarters.That makes the “Spezialanfertigung” name significant. This isn’t simply a limited trim level assembled alongside an ordinary CLE.The underlying car is extensively transformed into something unique.The production run was also reportedly already sold out before the car’s world premiere, turning the CLE 646 into a collector’s item before most people will ever see one on the road.

The AMG CLE 646 Is About More Than Horsepower

The headline figure will naturally be the 646 hp.But that is arguably the least interesting part of the CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung.What makes this car special is the collection of decisions surrounding that number: rear-wheel drive instead of all-wheel drive, 170 kg of weight reduction, a bespoke adjustable suspension, massive tires, carbon construction, carbon-ceramic brakes and genuine aerodynamic development.It is a remarkably uncompromising interpretation of the CLE.Mercedes-AMG could have simply made a faster CLE.Instead, it created a car that appears to be chasing something increasingly rare in modern performance cars: a mechanical, driver-focused experience where the hardware matters as much as the headline numbers.

With just 30 examples, the chances of seeing one outside a private collection will be slim.But perhaps that’s appropriate. The Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung isn’t intended to be the AMG that everyone can have. It’s the AMG built for the few who want the most extreme version possible.
